Thicker than air

HAL presents WINDSCAPES, a collection of wind recordings and textures created by Academy Award-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker.

WINDSCAPES offers an extraordinary combination of Becker’s expertise, both as a field recordist and a foley artist.

The rare sounds of winds in remote places are met with the expressiveness of Becker’s work as a foley artist in a powerful and visceral combination making WINDSCAPES not only unique but also extremely versatile.

Check out the very special sounds from this collection by taking a look at our FILE LIST and complete UCS compliant METADATA CHART.

Sculpting the world

The sound of wind is shaped by its interactions with the environment. It merges with the different materials it finds on its path, continuously evolving in unexpected ways. Here, the wind is presented almost as a physical entity, transforming and being transformed by everything it touches.

A modular approach, endless possibilities

The sounds of the library are classified into 3 types :

LOCATIONS   97 files – Field recordings of various winds in unique and distinctive environments such as deserts, moors, forests…

TEXTURES   262 files – Foley recordings of different materials moving, shaking, flapping, rattling, squeaking as if they were affected by the force of wind (leaves, sand, cloth, metal, wood, rustic interiors…)

ELEMENTS   100 files – The wind thought of and broken down as a kind of material itself. This category combines pristine recordings of real winds, each with very specific elements as their defining characteristic (whistling winds, isolated gusts, steady rumbles, fast buffeting gales…), foley recordings that aim to emulate these same elements (broadband granular textures, air swishes, whistling ropes, air resonating through narrow tubes…), and designed sounds. The latter are not intended to be fully fleshed-out designed assets but rather to act as building blocks, remaining organic and minimalistic.

Each category has its own interest and could make a library on their own, but they show their true strength when combined together.

Radium patches were also created to inspire users to push this modular approach even further — to really sculpt the wind and easily create dynamics and variations.

WINDSCAPES is not just about the sounds you get, but all the other sounds you’ll create through experimentation.

The library comes in two versions : one with LCR/stereo files and another exclusively in stereo – with identical content.

Don’t be caught in a whirlwind

As with our other libraries, it’s really easy to find your way around WINDSCAPES. File names are concise and consistent. All sounds are fully embedded with UCS compliant extensive metadata.

For Soundminer users, we have once again used the powerful Open Tier field as a way to help navigate the library in an easy and intuitive fashion.

Nicolas Becker’s body of work

Starting his career as a foley artist, then sound designer and composer, Nicolas Becker has worked on films such as Gravity, 127 Hours, Arrival, Wuthering Heights, and Sound of Metal (for which he was awarded an Oscar for Best Sound). His unique journey is defined by a multidisciplinary approach and a passion for experimentation.

Becker is also interested in sound research, collaborating with scientists and developers to push the frontiers of his art. Each project is an opportunity to travel, record new sounds, create innovative tools and experiment with unusual recording techniques.

More than a simple collection of sounds, WINDSCAPES offers a glimpse into this singular creative process as yet another gesture from its creator.
